When to call an ambulance

If you think someone's life is at risk, call 111. Don't wait to be sure.

  1. Call 111 now

    • Not breathing, or struggling to breathe
    • Unconscious or can't be woken
    • Chest pain or pressure
    • Face drooping, arm weakness, or slurred speech
    • Heavy bleeding that won't stop
    • Serious injury from a crash or fall
    • A seizure that won't stop
    • Severe allergic reaction
  2. See a doctor today

    • A cut that might need stitches
    • A possible broken bone, if they can still move safely
    • A high fever that isn't coming down
    • Feeling very unwell and getting worse
  3. Get advice

    • Not sure how serious it is
    • Minor illness or injury
    • Questions about medicine

When you call 111

  1. Say you need an ambulance.
  2. Give the address or location. Use landmarks if you don't know it.
  3. Tell them what's happened and whether the person is awake and breathing.
  4. Don't hang up until they tell you to. They'll tell you what to do while you wait.
